Oligoaeschna amata (Fӧrster, 1903)

Family: Aeshnidae
Scientific Name: Oligoaeschna amata (Fӧrster, 1903)
Common Name: Paddle-tail

In May 2015, I came across a lone female Oligoaeschna amata perched on the leaf of a fern tree in the thicket of the Upper Seletar Reservoir Park.

For afar, the female looks rather weak and hanging precariously from the tip of the leaf.

I was rather cautious not to disturb the dragonfly and managed to take a couple of photos.

From afar, it is hard to distinguish the exact species of this dragonfly. Only upon closer inspection, did I manage to ascertain that it is of the Oligoaeschna species.
Another unique feature is that this individual has it’s anal appendages broken-off.
Judging from the missing appendages, this female could have been already mated with a male.
From the dorsal view of this female, it has apple green eyes and amber wings. The abdomen is banded with green markings.
It seems that it doesn’t has the T-shape mark on it’s fron.
It is a medium size dragonfly.
An enlarge view of the female. You can see the wing venation in this picture.
